š¢ What Coaches Look For
Most athletes focus on skill but coaches are evaluating so much more. Hereās what actually separates you when talent looks the same.

š° COLLEGIATE ELITES WEEKLY
Issue 044 ā April 14, 2026
When athletes think about what coaches are looking for, the focus is almost always the same:
Speed. Strength. Skill.
And yes, those matter.
But thereās another side that doesnāt get talked about enough:
What coaches are looking for beyond your athletic ability.
Because at a certain point, a lot of athletes look the same.
They can play.
Theyāve trained hard.
Theyāve put in the work.
What separates athletes isnāt always just talent.
Itās attitude, effort, and coachability.
š§ FEEDBACK IS TAKEN AND USED
Coachability shows up in the small moments every day.
Not just in what you hear, but how you respond and adjust.
Coachable athletes donāt get caught up in how feedback sounds.
They listen and lock in on what to do next.
They adjust.
They try again.
They improve.
Coachable athletes also ask questions.
They stay curious.
They want to understand the why, not just the what.
This tells a coach everything.
šŖ EFFORT STAYS HIGH EVEN WHEN ITāS HARD
Everyone looks good when itās easy.
Coaches watch when itās not.
When youāre tired.
When the drill is tough.
When things arenāt going your way.
There are going to be days where nothing feels easy.
But elite athletes donāt avoid whatās hard.
They donāt cut reps short.
They donāt check out mentally.
They stay in it.
They lean in when it would be easier to pull back.
Because growth usually shows up right on the other side of discomfort.
š MAKE THE TEAM BETTER
Coaches are also watching how you impact the group.
Not just your performance, but your presence.
Do you bring energy?
Do you stay engaged?
Do you support others?
This shows up most when itās not your moment.
When youāre not getting reps.
When someone else is being coached.
When things arenāt going your way.
Do you check out or stay connected?
Elite athletes stay invested in the team.
They understand that how they show up affects everyone.
Because from a coachās perspective, the athletes who make the team better are reliable, consistent, and elevate the group around them.
And coaches notice that.
š£ļø BODY LANGUAGE MATTERS
Body language is one of the fastest ways coaches evaluate an athlete.
How you react.
How you respond after a mistake.
Do you reset quickly?
Or do you let frustration take you out of the moment?
From a coachās perspective, body language is not separate from performance, it is part of performance.
Because energy, effort, and engagement arenāt extras they show up in how you carry yourself every rep.
šÆ FINAL THOUGHT
Coachability is what shows up when things arenāt perfect.
When youāre tired.
When youāre being corrected.
When itās not your moment.
Itās how you respond.
How you adjust.
How you apply what youāre being taught.
Because skill might get you noticed but how you show up, learn, and improve is what separates you.
