🗓️ Consistency Over Perfection

Your routine will change this summer. Your standards don’t have to.

📰 COLLEGIATE ELITES WEEKLY

Issue 055 — June 30, 2026

Summer is full of schedule changes.

Family vacations. Holiday weekends. Barbecues. Camps. Long days at the lake. Late nights with friends.

These are some of the best memories you’ll make all year.

Enjoy them.

But don’t mistake a change in routine for a reason to pause your goals.

Your routine will change.
Your standards don’t have to.

The goal was never to follow the perfect plan.

The goal is to keep moving forward, even when the plan changes.

🔄 ROUTINE ISN’T THE GOAL. CONSISTENCY IS.

It’s easy to stay disciplined when everything follows a routine.

School is in session.
Practice is at the same time every day.
The gym is open.
Your calendar makes sense.

Then summer arrives.

Suddenly you’re traveling.
You’re staying with family.
Practice isn’t scheduled.

Everything looks different.

For a lot of athletes, that’s when training quietly slips away.

Not because they stopped caring.

But because they were attached to a routine instead of committed to the goal.

Elite athletes understand something different.

A routine is just one way to make progress.

Consistency is the goal.

If the routine has to change, they adjust.

But they don’t lower the standard they’ve set for themselves.

🧭 DON’T CHASE PERFECT. FIND A WAY

One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is believing every workout has to look exactly the same.

“I only have 20 minutes.”
“I don’t have access to weights.”
“I’ll make it up when I get back home.”

But progress doesn’t care what your workout looked like.

It cares that you kept showing up.

Maybe today’s workout is shorter.
Maybe it’s bodyweight exercises instead of lifting.
Maybe it’s a longer run instead of speed work.
Maybe it’s ten minutes of mobility before everyone else wakes up.

That’s okay.

The question isn’t:

“Can I do my normal workout?”

The better question is:

“What’s the best thing I can do today?”

Athletes who keep improving don’t spend their energy wishing for perfect conditions.

They find a way to keep moving forward.

☀️ ENJOY THE SUMMER. KEEP THE COMMITMENT.

Being committed to your goals doesn’t mean saying no to summer.

Go on the vacation.
Spend the day at the lake.
Stay for the barbecue.
Celebrate the holiday.
Make the memories.

Just don’t let an entire day disappear before asking yourself if you’ve done something to move closer to your goals.

Wake up a little earlier.
Train before everyone else heads out.
Go for a run or a workout before the day’s plans begin.

It doesn’t have to be your perfect session.

It just has to reflect the commitment you’ve made to yourself.

The athletes who stay on track are the ones who learn to fit their goals into real life.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒 PARENTS: HELP THEM LEARN TO ADAPT

Summer is a great opportunity to teach a lesson that extends far beyond sports.

Life rarely goes exactly as planned.
Schedules change.
Responsibilities pile up.

Instead of solving every scheduling challenge for your athlete, let them solve it.

Ask questions like:

  • “When are you planning to train today?”

  • “If that doesn’t work, what’s your backup plan?”

  • “What’s something you can do without a gym?”

Those questions help to build ownership.

Over time, your athlete stops relying on someone else to organize their development.

They begin thinking ahead.
Planning ahead.
Adapting.

And that’s a skill that lasts long after their playing days are over.

💭 FINAL THOUGHT

Summer is something you should enjoy.

Take the trip.
Spend time with your family and friends.

But remember that your goals don’t disappear just because your schedule changes.

You don’t need perfect conditions to keep improving.

You just need the willingness to adjust instead of making excuses.

Your routine will change.
Your standards don’t have to.

Find a way.
Keep moving forward.
Be Elite.
