Don’t Let the Break Break You
Breaks don’t ruin seasons. Inconsistency does. Here’s how to protect your progress when routines shift and structure disappears.

📰 COLLEGIATE ELITES WEEKLY
Issue 036 — February 17, 2025
Ever notice how some athletes come back from break sharper… and others look like they’re starting over?
That difference isn’t talent, it’s consistency. This week, we’re breaking down how to protect your momentum when your routine changes.
🔁 When the Schedule Changes, Do You?
We’re entering that stretch of the year.
School breaks.
Travel.
Holiday plans.
Later nights.
Looser structure.
And every season, it happens.
Routines shift…
Momentum fades…
Training becomes “optional.”
But here’s the truth:
Breaks don’t hurt athletes.
Lack of structure does.
And the athletes who grow the most this time of year?
They treat breaks as an advantage.
📆 MORE TIME ≠ MORE PROGRESS
When school pauses, it feels like you suddenly have more hours in the day.
But unstructured time is a test.
Without a plan, days drift.
Sleep schedules move.
Meals get inconsistent.
Workouts get pushed back… and then skipped.
Training is usually the first thing to go.
Not because athletes don’t care.
But because they didn’t decide ahead of time how they were going to win the day.
🧠 ELITE ATHLETES THINK DIFFERENTLY
High-level athletes don’t wait for structure.
They build it.
They understand that momentum is fragile.
If they’ve built rhythm during the season, they protect it.
That might look like:
Training first thing in the morning before the day gets away from them
Scheduling workouts before social plans
Getting the “fun” done early so practice has full focus
Planning lift days and skill sessions before the week even starts
They don’t rely on feeling motivated.
They rely on intention.
🚀 BREAKS ARE OPPORTUNITIES
Here’s what most athletes miss:
Breaks are one of the few times in the year when you actually have space to make a jump.
Less academic stress.
More recovery flexibility.
More time to refine details.
If you prepare correctly, this is where separation happens.
Athletes who stay consistent through breaks often return:
Sharper
More confident
Better conditioned
More prepared for the demands ahead
While others are trying to “get back into shape,” they’re already building on top of momentum.
🧱 MOMENTUM IS BUILT DAILY
Progress in sport isn’t about one huge week.
It’s about stacking days.
And consistency during unstable periods builds mental toughness.
Anyone can train when the schedule is set for them.
The real separator?
Training when no one is forcing you to.
🎯 A SIMPLE BREAK PLAN
Before your next break starts, ask yourself:
What days am I training?
What time am I training?
What is the focus of each session?
What needs to be protected in my schedule?
Write it down.
Decide now.
Because once the break begins, decisions get harder.
🏁 DON’T LET THE BREAK BREAK YOU
Athletes who handle breaks well build confidence.
They prove to themselves that their commitment isn’t conditional.
Stay consistent.
Stay focused.
Protect your momentum.
When the season continues, you won’t be catching up.
You’ll be ahead.
